Western Kenya relies primarily on surface water sources located large distances apart. This often means long walks for families in search of water. In addition, many of these water sources are of poor quality and result in water-borne diseases. In the past, Kenya Finland (KEFINCO) drilled some boreholes in our region but they are few and far apart. These are the following future projects suggested by ECAG:
Obtain a drill rig to penetrate rocks and drill wells.
Gain training on the use and maintenance of this machine.
Construct pumps to sell in nearby markets that are affordable for well/borehole installation.
Obtain a tanker-mounted lorry to transport water to families in times of severe water shortages.
Engage in water quality monitoring of surface and groundwater supplies.
Utilize SODIS water technology to treat surface and groundwater supplies.
Set up small fruit processing industry.
Build cold-storage facilities and obtain seed-harvesting equipment.
Support women in the development of vegetable gardens for their farms.
Obtain funding to continue these projects into the future.
Obtain donations to cover costs of drilling the bore holes for poor families and institutions which may not be able to afford the cost and for pumps to install in the boreholes.
Obtain donations to help strengthen tree planting projects already in existence to continue planting water catchment friendly trees in water catchment areas by developing more tree nurseries.
